Turning a jobs board into a careers portal
Helping Royal Devon NHS Trust with their hiring initiatives
In the NHS, it is a significant challenge to attract top talent. The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has traditionally used a minimalist jobs-board approach, directing applicants straight to the information they need. However, the Trust has come to realise the importance of "selling" itself and its culture to prospective applicants first.
To address this, the Trust is evolving its recruitment strategy to showcase Devon as an attractive place to live and work, offering relocation support and opportunities for candidates to experience the service firsthand. By highlighting its unique culture and values, the Trust aims to position itself as an employer of choice in the healthcare sector.

We applied an emotive design strategy to address the recruitment challenge. The new careers microsite features a warm, editorial aesthetic that encourages exploration and discovery. Its highly visual layout is designed to inspire potential applicants.
The content is strategically organised into four main areas: organisational information, role-specific details, first-person narratives, and location-related stories. This structure allows visitors to easily navigate and connect with the Trust's offerings.
We've prominently highlighted career pathways, encouraging potential applicants to view Royal Devon as a long-term career opportunity. This approach aims to create an emotional connection with candidates, showcasing not just job openings, but a fulfilling professional journey.
By incorporating engaging design elements, the microsite evokes positive emotions and fosters a sense of belonging. This user-centred design approach aims to resonate with visitors on a deeper level, strengthening their connection to the Royal Devon brand and ultimately enhancing recruitment efforts.
